Anyone up for a swim?

August 3, 2006 at 8:36 pm (Uncategorized)

hooper.jpgshe-was-the-first.jpgI remember it well. I was anxious for months before the movie came out. It was all I could talk about, the ONLY thing worth talking about, really. What would it look like? Was it real? Would we be scared? My mother kept telling me to forget about it, I wasn’t going. I begged, I cried. I stopped speaking to her for two weeks. Finally, she caved, I was going to my first movie. I conned both of my parents into taking me and my best friend “into town” to see our very first movie on the big screen. I remember my dad swinging the car into the parking lot of CMP on Main Street in Lewiston and we anxiously climbed out of the car and headed up the hill to the Empire Theater. The marquee was huge to us, hanging high above the sidewalk. From the bridge I would see the four big black letters on it that would forever change my life. Four simple letters that would change the way I would forever feel about the coast I had grown to love. Four letters, that to this day, make me unable to set foot in the ocean. JAWS. I was only eight years old in 1975 when the movie opened, but I was never much of a Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty kind of girl. I liked the blood, guts and gore–or so I thought. On that day in 1975, as I sat between my parents, I was transposed to Amity Island. I could smell the ocean, feel the sand between my toes. I could hear the distant cry of a seagull and I could hear the waves crash ontot he beach. Oh yes, I was in Amity. Then the shark came. The “da dum, da dum” music started and the beautiful swimmer was nothing more than an appetizer. That was the end of my swimming in the ocean, as well. Today, thirty one years later, I will not set foot in the ocean.

Last weekend, M. Night Shalaman’s movie, The Lady In The Water opened. It was God Awful, as Mark said, and they’ll never be another comparison to JAWS. It was the first movie I had ever seen and it had the biggest impact. Talk to me about your first movie…

I remember seeing Jaws as well at the Empire Theater way back when. It didn’t have that effect on me because I still take a dip in the ocean every now and then. Granted, I only go up to my knees now, but I still enjoy it.

I remember one time going to a 3 hour movie dealing with astronauts and such. This was at the theater near the current Marden’s. The only thing I really remember about that is that my date had the sweatiest hands I have ever come across. The kiss was memorable too only because my date’s lips reminded me of raw liver. To this day, I still cringe at the thought.

Does anyone remember when The Life of Brian came out and quite a few of the local churches were boycotting it? I happened to go the night that the church that I was attending was picketing. I know that someone had to see me in line, but no one ever said anything to me about it. I guess that’s the good thing about a theater offering more than one movie for viewing.

Now that I think about it, I went to a lot of movies with the guy with sweaty hands. I guess that’s what you get when you’re in high school and the money is low.

Ah, MT, you’re killing me, now it’s another round of nightmares for me. I’ll have to tell you about the first TWO movies I remember seeing.

I’m not making this up: my Aunt Rose and her boyfriend took me to see “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” I was about 4 years old, why did they let me in the theater? what was my aunt thinking? I can still see a wizened claw coming out of black water and leaving dig marks in mud. I threw up on the boyfriend, and screamed like a banshee. Nightmares and screaming all night.

My mother was pissed, but eventually she let my aunt take me to the movies again, what could be wrong with “Bambi”? I guess I was such a nervous wreck to be back at the Strand Theater, that when Bambi’s mother died it was the same thing all over again.

My aunt never took me again. Thank God.

Jaws. Best movie ever. Good taste in movies, MT!

I’ll never forget seeing Jaws for the first and, only time. I guess I must have been about..ummmm…. 5 years old! Ha. What a friggen nightmare! I had NO idea what I was going to see but, I did know that when that music started, I was in for no good. I’ve never watched it again. I mean, that first girls “glup, glup” was enough for me for a lifetime!

The absolute WORST movie I’ve ever seen has to be “Seven”. Gawd, talk about gross. I watched (or, didn’t watch) most of it from under a blanket. The sloth was the worst! Gross. I don’t mind scary but, I hate gross.

  5. AO said,

Oh, my first movie was also seen at the grand Empire Theater. It was “The Sound of Music”. My sister Linda took me and two of my sisters. It was one of the best days of my very young life. I was so enthralled with Julie Andrews spinning away on that mountain top…wow…it was in COLOR and the screen…much bigger than our RCA TV screen! I had never seen anything like it. So, I know own a copy of “The Sound of Music” and, whenever I need to bring a little magic back into my life, I pop it into my VCR.

My brother and I used to con our mother into taking us to R rated movies. there is something wrong with watching soft pornos with your mom, regardless of how old you are.

I saw Star Wars and all I remember about is that I went with the local summer rec crowd and one of the counselors, a wicked stick up the ass type, didn’t want me to go because she was chasing one of the other counselors.

But Jesus, the first movie I ever saw? I think it had something to do with elves and I know it was in Lewiston. It was in the area behind Kennedy park, not all that far from where Lewiston’s Central Fire station is.

Worst damn movie I ever saw was Nightmare on Elm Street. I saw it when I was down at Camp Lejeune and I can’t watch that series of movies to this day.

The two best lines I can recall from a movie are:

    1) Aliens, where the space marines just had their asses handed to them by the monster: “I don’t know if you’ve been keeping up on recent history, but we just had our asses kicked out there!”

    2) The Charlie Sheen movie where he plays topper Harley and he’s talking with the woman he loves, about her fiancee and how stupid he is. She says, “don’t get me started.”

  7. jarheaddoc said,

That’s what it was, AO, the Empire theater. Unless I’m wrong, which is probably the case….

  8. AO said,

If it was next to Kennedy Part then it was the place on Pine St. JD. What the hell was it called? I just had the name in my head and…it slipped out. Must have something to do with old age!

  9. jarheaddoc said,

    I R kin fu-said! Alice Hi-mer’s, I gess! But that sounds right.

  10. Linda said,

One one theater in Rumford (none now) so I don’t have that problem.

  11. Linda said,

Well I have memory problems, sure, but not with remembering the place I saw movies when i was a kid

  12. AO said,

Okay, for the stupidest movie line I’ve ever heard: “Is it still raining? I hadn’t noticed”. I may have it wrong but, JAY-SUS! That line was such a fucker in such a good movie. WHAT were they thinking about?

  13. AO said,

I know it began with a “B”. Well, at least I’m pretty sure it did.

  14. AO said,

Then again, it may have been on Park ST.

  15. Linda said,

Off the topic for a moment — Omnius, if you read this, what’s up? or what’s down? referring to your blog of course. Are you moving? if so, don’t forget to leave us a trail of bread crumbs.

  16. Linda said,

And while I’m at it — Brenda, did you read my reply to you on “Un Fly de Espanol”?

  17. AO said,

Linda, How was your day at the lake?

  18. Mandy, the obit writer said,

The first move I can remember seeing probably ranks up there with the all time worst, but as it was my first movie I retain a certain amount of affection for it — the Olivia Newton-John cinematic “experience” Xanadu. Looking back at the evening I saw the movie I recall getting violently ill afterwards. Maybe it was my body’s way of conveying what my four-year-old’s mind couldn’t grasp — the movie sucked.

  19. AO said,

Mandy, I saw that one too. And, you’re right…it sucked. Ranks right up there with one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Can’t believe I paid to see that one.

  20. Mandy, the obit writer said,

Too bad it never wound up on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

  21. Linda said,

AO, it was GREAT at the lake. It was breezy and not too hot. They were still cleaning up after a bit storm the night before. The water was cold, but once I got in, I stayed in for an hour.

Got a big chip out of my windshield from a truck on Rte 17, but I guess it was worth it.

  22. AO said,

Well, at least we won’t have to worry about Ted Turner trying to …do something very strange to it and…making it a “treasure” for our children. Right? Right??? Gawd help us!!

  23. AO said,

Glad to hear you had a good time, Linda. ANY time spent at a lake is good. But, sorry to hear about you windshield.

I had to go to the Funeral Parlor tonight. Never a good time. We all know that. But, I did pick my mom up and…we ended up having such a good time together. She even bought me an ice cream cone on the way home. How much more could I ask for?

  24. Linda said,

Anyone see “Aguirre The Wrath of God”? I know it’s a classic movie but I didn’t get it, too much gloom for me. In my family, it’s the reference point for all things you SHOULD like but just plain don’t — it got all the stars, but bored us stupid.

  25. Linda said,

I’ll have ice cream with my mother on Saturday. I have to bug out of here — the Wilton Blueberry Festival parade goes by my house, and if I stay here I’ll be trapped by 8:30 a.m. Parades are fine, but enough already with the clowns and Shriners cars and every spare fire engine in the county blaring its siren. Makes me nuts.

  26. AO said,

Can’t blame you. I’d bug out too. Bug out. Hmmm…didn’t they do that in M*A*S*H?

    I’m off. Sleep well, all!

MT, according to ’60 Minutes,’ In 2005, nine people were killed by sharks, world-wide. In contrast, 751 people died from defective electric toasters. Swim on. . . .

My first movie? I think it was ‘Grease,’ in ’78.

First concert? Captain and Tennille, also in the late ’70s.

Last movie I’ve seen in the theater? LOTR’s ‘Return of the King.’

Last movie I walked out of? ‘Highlander 2.’

Last movie I turned off on the VCR ’cause it sucked? ‘Anchorman.’

Next concert I’m seeing? Bela Fleck and the Flecktones’ ‘Acoustic Planet’ tour, down in Boston on Monday.

    Rain, rain, raaaaaaiiiiiiiin . . . . the weather’s fine.

  31. Bulldog said,

I think the movie theater you’re referencing on Park St was the Ritz, wasn’t it? Wasn’t it also a “shadey” movie theater? Well, at least that’s what I heard.

I went to see JAWS too and I couldn’t pee in the toilet for a long time afterwards because I was afraid he’d come up and bite me in the ass!! Seriously! I ended up peeing in the tub (until mom caught me). It never affected my ability to swim in the ocean though. Just to go pee. wuteva!

And Bobbie, I never saw You Light Up My Life but I did go see Debbie & Pat Boone when that song was number 1 for 10,000 straight weeks back in the day. That was my first concert I ever went to (thank God my taste in music changed– well, kind of).

  32. AO said,

K2, You had me spitting out my coffee this morning because I was laughing so hard at you. I can’t flucking believe that you went to see “Captain & Tennille”!! hahahaha.

  33. K2 said,

Hey now, they’ve got some great tunes, AO. I’ll take their greatest hits over any top 40 shit nowadays.

    Still, I was gay.

I also saw Hall & Oates on my 13th birthday. I was a closet John fan; but looking back, that group was all Daryl. And face it, they have some damn good tunes too. So I guess I’m still gay. Oh well. What can you do? . . .

  34. jarheaddoc said,

Hey, I saw Dan Fogelberg many, many years ago. I think Iwon the tickets from WLAM or some damn thing like that. The concert sucked and I didn’t get laid afterwards. I lost twice, free tickets or not.

    Hello peeps!

Just excercising my bragging rights — that is my boy on the front page of the SJ today. (I know, with all that is happening in the world today, seems weird for him to make headlines for getting free ice-cream, but I’m a proud momma dammit! 🙂 )

    Ain’t he sweet?

  37. K2 said,

Nadine, the damn electronic version of the SJ doesn’t have the photo — those bastards.

I’m sure he’s cute though, even if his mother’s an absinthe-swilling vagabond.

  38. Nadine said,

K2, yes it does…scroll dwon a bit and to the right — you can click on the picture for a better view. I just pulled it up…

MMmmm, absinthe, s’been a while — expensive stuff. But yes, he’s very cute despite my deplorable lifestyle…heh.

  39. AO said,

He’s a cutie, Nadine. I don’t blame you for being a proud momma.

  40. Linda said,

He sure is, Nadine. Loves that Cherry Garcia, does he?

  41. Mainetarr said,

Nadine, he has your eyes. He is a cutie that’s for sure. I would buy him an ice cream anyday.

  42. K2 said,

Oh, me see. A fine lad, indeed.

  43. K2 said,

And it was Garcia’s birthday on the 1st. And he died on the 9th. *whimper, sob*

  44. Bobbie said,

You have a good looking son, Nadine.

  45. Linda said,

So who’s going to the movies this weekend? anyone? maybe it’s a good time to be outside instead, but is there anything really good playing?

  46. Linda said,

jd, can you explain #6 please — why would the “stick up the ass” counselor not want you along? how would that help her with the other counselor that she was chasing? I’m just trying to stay up with the program you know? and since i am dialing up tonight it’s going to be a challenge anyhow.

  47. Mainetarr said,

Topsham Fair starts Sunday, and I think the Monmouth Fair is this week too. Fair season has begun. Fun fun fun…

Bobbie, it was the Ritz Theater were all the XXX movies used to play. Who in hell would go into one of those places and actually dare to touch anything? Gak!! Pee Wee Herman ville. Yuk.

  48. jarheaddoc said,

Linda, as far as number 6 goes, she just had a stick up the ass to begin with, and she evidently thought I was going to rat her out for anything she was going to try with the other counselor.

  49. Linda said,

    I see, thanks for explaining.

    Of course you wouldn’t have.

  50. Nadine said,

Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments about my son! Mainetarr, he looks nothing like me…he’s georgeous, hehe.

Yeah…Cherry Garcia — my hippie kid!

On topic: My first rated R movie was Saturday Night Fever, but that was on HBO at a friends house so that doesn’t count. My first theater movie…no clue, don’t remember. I still very rarely goes to the movies (wow, I guess I don’t date as much as I should! Heh!).

So, your first R rated movie?

  51. Linda said,

Friday night was “kiddie date night” at the Strand (not that anyone called it that). One week they were supposed to be showing something “suitable” but instead they showed “Anatomy of a Murder”. There were about 200 twelve and thirteen year olds in the theater, and we couldn’t follow the plot at all — not that we tried very hard probably what with all the focus on who was “sitting together.” At Mass on Sunday, the priest ranted from the pulpit about children seeing evil movies, and we were all grounded from the movies for a month or two. that was my first R movie.

  52. Linda said,

OK, I’m sure you guys will be back later, have fun. It’s hard to believe but you know the deal on dial up night, I’m logging out early. It’ll be a long time until morning. Are you SURE there’s no more purgatory, ’cause … oh never mind.

  53. Linda said,

Well … that’s unusual. Nobody home?

  54. Bobbie said,

The only reason I’m up this early is….you know, I really don’t have a reason this morning!

  55. Linda said,

Bobbie, you really WERE up early! It’s a gorgeous day here, that in itself is a good reason to be up. Not that it’s early any more.

  56. Linda said,

Just wondering — what’s up with Snakes On A Plane? If I understand correctly, it’s being released later this month, but already it’s a cult phenomenon. Can it possibly live up to its hype?

  57. LaFlamme said,

Okay, my first movie was a horrible rock opera/horror flick titled “Phantom of the Paradise.” Anyone seen it? Do you have terrible flashbacks, too? Explain.

  58. brenda said,

Nadine, I guess we must know each other….

Linda, I’ll go check, thanks I’ve been away from here for awhile…

I think you wouldn’t be surprised if I told you I saw JAWS when I was 18 and walked out sometime after the eyeball hanging out scene?

Then a few years ago, my teenaged daughter showed a VCR movie to my then- 11 y/o son, called “The People Under The Stairs” which I had to insist on removing soon after they began eating the man in the basement . I was physically & emotionally sick the rest of the day.
I decided that any movie that involves eating people must be rated X not R.

  59. Linda said,

Even “Eating Raoul”? That’s the only movie I ever really liked that involved eating people.
